The Meaning Behind the Prayer Flags Commonly Seen in Tibet

Tibet, a land abundant in sunlight and faith, has long been home to generations of Tibetan people. Its architecture, religion, and culture are deeply influenced by Tibetan traditions.

According to legend, the Buddha once sat beneath the Bodhi tree, holding a scroll of scriptures and meditating. A powerful gust of wind blew the scriptures from his hands, scattering them into countless fragments. In Tibetan, these flags are called "Lungta," where "Lung" means "wind" and "Ta" means "horse," symbolizing the swift transmission of prayers across the heavens by the wind. Commonly referred to as "Wind Horse Flags," they flutter with each breeze, and each movement is believed to be a recitation of prayers, continuously carrying human hopes to the divine.

The meaning of prayer flags is clear: they are not meant to decorate the landscape, but to seek blessings, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles.

The five colors of the flags represent the purification of the five poisons—greed, anger, ignorance, pride, and doubt—and the cultivation of five kinds of wisdom. The arrangement of colors follows the order from sky to earth:

• The topmost flag is blue, symbolizing the sky.

• Below it is white, symbolizing clouds.

• Next comes red, symbolizing fire.

• Followed by green, symbolizing water.

• And finally yellow at the bottom, symbolizing earth.

Prayer flags have become a powerful spiritual symbol unique to Tibetan culture. Without standing before them, it is hard to feel their soul-stirring presence; without approaching them with reverence, it is impossible to truly grasp the profound emotions they embody.
