In the Tibetan context, “kora” or circumambulation refers to walking around sacred places—mountains, lakes, or temples. But when someone mentions kora without specifying a location, they’re almost always referring to the Mount Kailash Kora in Ngari, western Tibet.

For many, this is not just a trek—it’s a life journey.

The optimal seasons for kora are spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October).

In spring, temperatures are milder and the crowds are thinner—ideal for immersing yourself in the serenity and spirituality of the journey.

Autumn brings clearer skies and more stable weather, making it the most reliable time to safely complete the trek.

Why Mount Kailash?

There are many sacred mountains in Tibet, each imbued with divine significance in Tibetan Buddhism: Kawa Karpo in Yunnan, Namcha Barwa in Nyingchi, Amne Machin in Qinghai, and Minya Konka in Sichuan.

But only Mount Kailash is revered by four major world religions—Tibetan Buddhism, Bon, Hinduism, and Jainism—as the center of the universe.

It is considered a global spiritual axis, a cosmic mountain whose importance transcends borders and cultures.

Facing the Three Major Challenges

To complete the Kailash kora, you must overcome three challenges: high altitude, extreme cold, and physical exhaustion.

  1. Altitude (High)


    Tibet is called the “Roof of the World,” and Ngari is the “roof of the roof.”
    Along the journey from Lhasa, most places are above 4,500 meters (14,760 ft)—including Saga, Darchen (the kora starting point), and Dirapuk Monastery.
    Tip: Arrive in Lhasa at least 3 days early to acclimate. There is no better way to adjust to high elevation.

  2. Cold


    Ngari’s dryness makes the cold even more intense—imagine “dry on dry, cold on cold.”
    Tip: Even in April, you’ll need a high-quality down sleeping bag, down jacket, and insulated pants. These are essential for survival in the snow-covered terrain.

  3. Fatigue


    The kora is 52 km (32 miles) long. The start at Darchen is 4,660 m, and the highest point—Dolma La Pass—is 5,650 m (18,536 ft).
    Tip: Hire a porter in Darchen to reduce your pack weight and help you monitor your condition. If day one is already overwhelming, it’s better to turn back—no spiritual belief encourages risking your life.

Border Permit Required

You’ll be passing through strict checkpoints at Luluguan and Mayouqiao.
Without a border entry permit, you may be denied access.
Tip: Apply in advance at your local Public Security Bureau. Mention “Shigatse, Everest, and Ngari regions.” If you need to apply in Lhasa, allow at least a full day.

Packing List Essentials

  • Waterproof high-ankle hiking boots (well broken-in!)

  • 30L+ backpack with good support system

  • Two trekking poles

  • Knee braces

  • Gaiters & crampons (for ice on Dolma La in spring/fall)

  • High-quality down sleeping bag (comfort rated to at least -10°C / 14°F)

  • Waterproof shell jacket and pants

  • Down jacket (a must regardless of season)

  • Thermal base layers

  • Warm hat (light and heavy options)

  • Gloves and neck gaiter

  • Thick socks (bring extra pairs)

  • Antibiotics: Norfloxacin, tetracycline, Huanglian detox pills

  • Antivirals: Ribavirin, Banlangen

  • Respiratory: Cold relief capsules, lozenges

  • Digestive: Antacids, enzyme pills, herbal remedies

  • Motion sickness: Dimenhydrinate

  • Allergy: Cetirizine, chlorpheniramine

  • Heatstroke: Essential balm, cooling oil

  • Trauma: Yunnan Baiyao, band-aids

  • Altitude: Rhodiola, Acetazolamide (consult your doctor)

Food & Hydration

  • Bring fresh fruit from Lhasa

  • Tea houses on day 1 offer butter tea and a place to warm up

  • Overnight spots offer basic noodle meals

  • Day 2 is more rugged; plan accordingly

Timing & Sleep Tips

  • Start early to avoid night trekking

  • Avoid sleeping too early (before 8 PM) at Dirapuk—this can disrupt your body clock and cause insomnia

  • Socializing near the fire helps with morale and warmth

Teamwork Is Vital

Find partners with a similar pace. Avoid trekking alone through risky sections.
Porters and local guides can be crucial for safety and success.

Hygiene

Avoid bathing before the kora to minimize risk of colds or altitude sickness.
Use wet wipes with hot water for basic cleaning.
After the kora, wait 2 hours post-shower before sleeping—this helps prevent post-exertion chills.

Acclimatization Advice

Before arriving in Tibet:

  • Ensure good rest and sleep

  • No smoking or alcohol

  • Treat existing colds before entering high altitudes

  • Start Rhodiola or ginseng supplements in advance

After arrival:

  • Avoid showers the first day

  • Rest, stay hydrated, eat light

  • Limit talking and walking speed

  • Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing
